October 6, 2020 -  Vietnam POW William Robinson is our guest for this month's virtual meeting. He holds the record as the longest-held enlisted POW in American history. Bill's book, "The Longest Rescue: The Life and Legacy of Vietnam POW William A. Robinson" tells about his experience of being shot down while on a rescue mission over North Vietnam, then finally being released in 1973 with the POWs his crew was sent to rescue nearly 8 years earlier. June 2, 2020 - Another special guest for our second Zoom meeting, WW II Veteran Hilbert Margol who served with his twin brother in the U.S. Army's 42nd Infantry "Rainbow" Division. On April 29, 1945, toward the end of the war in Europe, Hilbert and his brother Howard were the first two Allied soldiers to discover Dachau, the first of the Nazi's horrific concentration camps established and operated in Germany. February 4, 2020 -  Larry Nelson, a 29-time winner on the PGA Tour & Champions Tour combined, including three majors is February's guest speaker. Larry served in an Army Infantry unit in Vietnam. He took up golf for first time after returning from Vietnam, carefully studying Ben Hogan’s book “The Five Fundamentals of Golf” while he learned to play the game. January 7, 2020 -  Our first guest speaker of the new year is The Honorable Theodore Britton, Jr., who served as Marine in the Pacific during WW II in 1944, then again in Korea in 1951. Following his military service, Britton served under President Gerald Ford as U.S. Ambassador to Barbados and Grenada. May 7, 2019 - Rear Admiral Wendi Carpenter (USN Ret), the first female Navy pilot to be selected for Flag rank, is our guest speaker for this month. She completed a distinguished 34-year Navy career in 2011. November 6, 2018 - Guest speaker Command Sergeant Major Bennie G Adkins received the Medal of Honor in 2014 for actions in the A Shau Valley, Vietnam, in 1966. Wounded 18 times during 36 hours of battle, CSM Adkins then spent another 48 hours in the jungle, protecting other wounded soldiers and evading both NVA troops and a tiger before they were finally rescued by helicopter. You can read more about CSM Adkins at https://www.army.mil/medalofhonor/adkins/. April 3, 2018 - Mike Scruggs, author of the book "Lessons From Vietnam War: Truths The Media Never Told You," is our guest speaker for April. He will be speaking on the topic "The Ongoing Battle for Historical Truth: Vietnam and Beyond." As an Air Force flying officer, Mike lived through the hellish anti-aircraft environment of low-level armed reconnaissance and attack missions over the Ho Chi Minh Trail. March 6, 2018 - Our very special guest speaker is Medal of Honor recipient Patrick Henry Brady, Major General, USA, Retired. Gen. Brady served two tours in Vietnam as a Dust Off pilot for the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps.  During his tours, he flew over 3,000 combat missions and evacuated more than 5,000 wounded. Gen. Brady will discuss Medevac operations during and following Vietnam, his book entitled "Dead Men Flying: Victory in Viet Nam The Legend of Dust off: America's Battlefield Angels," and his perspective of the recent Ken Burns/ Lynn Novick film about the Vietnam War shown on PBS. February 6, 2018 - This month's speaker is R.J. Del Vecchio, the Executive Secretary of Vietnam Veterans for Factual History  www.VVFH.org. For many years this organization of knowledgeable historians, authors and veterans has worked to correct the historical record of the Vietnam War. Del served as a combat photographer with the U.S. Marines in Vietnam during 1968, and is the author of "Whitewash/Backwash: Myths of the Vietnam War." January 9, 2018 - This month's scheduled speaker is Dr. Jim Carmichael. Jim is a PhD counselor specializing in P.T.S.D. He is the author of "A Long Healing Come Slowly," a historical-fiction novel about a family suffering with the effects of P.T.S.D. Jim served with Echo Co., 2nd Battalion, 26th Marine Regiment, 9th MEB, 3rd Marine Division in Vietnam from late 1967 to the middle of December, 1968. NOTE: Due to the length of other activities, Dr. Carmichael did not speak and will be rescheduled at a later date, at which time he will be filmed.

October 3, 2017 -  This month, we will have the Atlanta Public Broadcasting [PBA-30] join us and give our members the opportunity to provide comments about the Ken Burns film on the Vietnam War. PBA-30 is not part of the Georgia Public Broadcasting/Television system, but it will be airing the documentary in November 2017. They plan to present Vietnam War veterans reactions to the video in conjunction with their presentation of it. So they have asked AVVBA to participate and we in turn have asked seven of our members to provide their remarks about their reactions to the Ken Burns film effort. December 6, 2016 - COL Brent Cummings speaks on the topic of "A Better Understanding of the Middle East." He is uniquely qualified to discuss this topic, because he served two tours in Israel working with the Palestinian Authority Defense Forces. Due to the sensitive nature of this presentation, it will not be recorded. But with the 75th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack this week, the Atlanta History Center is presenting a short video honoring those who lost their lives that day, including eyewitness testimony of Pearl Harbor survivors who were interviewed as part of the Atlanta History Center’s Veterans History Project.
